浑水成立于2010年7月，创始人卡尔森·布洛克，毕业于南加州大学，主攻金融辅修中文，后攻读了芝加哥肯特法学院的法学学位。他2005年来到上海，就职于一家美国律所；2008年创办了一家仓储物流公司。2010年，卡森对在美国上市的中国公司东方纸业拜访时看到，公司废弃的大门、陈旧的仓库宿舍以及无所事事的工人与财报描述大相径庭，公司库存也基本是一堆废纸。于是2010年6月28日，他召集了一批熟悉中国商业规则的人，在香港成立了“浑水公司”（Muddy Waters Research）。“浑水”这个名字取自中国谚语“浑水摸鱼”，这个词简直一语双关：既是指公司专门调查在资本市场里“浑水摸鱼”的公司，又指“在浑浊的水中更容易摸到鱼”，先把水搅浑，然后再通过借券卖出的方式获利.
浑水公司自2010年创立以来共做空超过16家中概股，包括分众传媒、新东方、辉山乳业、安踏体育，以及芝华仕沙发的母公司敏华控股等，其中9家目前已经退市。
2020年1月底，浑水公司发布沽空报告，指出瑞幸咖啡在经营数据上存在作假和欺诈行为。 2020年5月18日晚间， 美国做空机构浑水针对跟谁学发布做空报告。
